Bioquímico estadounidense. Se tituló de médico en la Universidad Washington. En 1992 compartió el Premio Nobel con Edmond H. Fischer (n. 1920) por el descubrimiento de la fosforilación reversible de las proteínas, un proceso bioquímico que regula las actividades proteicas en las células y gobierna incontables procesos necesarios para la vida. Los errores en la fosforilación proteica han sido implicados en enfermedades como la diabetes, el cáncer y el mal de Alzheimer.
